Our whirlybirds work

A whirlybird is a wind-driven roof vent. It has no motor: the breeze spins the head, which draws hot, damp air out of the roof space while fresh air comes in at the eaves. Fitted properly, it helps keep the roof space cooler in summer and drier through winter. Fitted badly, or left to rust, it becomes a leak and a rattle.

Most of the whirlybird calls we get are about the base, not the head. The flashing or collar that seals the vent to the roof perishes or rusts, and water runs down the shaft into the ceiling. That's a re-flash and re-seal, the same as any other roof penetration. A whirlybird that squeals or wobbles usually has a worn bearing and is better replaced before it works the base loose.

On the Shire's metal and Colorbond roofs the vent sits in a flashing shaped to the sheet profile; on terracotta and concrete tile, a tile is swapped for a matching vent base so water still sheds over it. If the roof around it is already failing, we'll say so and quote the repair alongside it.

  • New whirlybird supply and installation, tile or metal roof
  • Noisy, wobbling or seized whirlybirds replaced
  • Leaking whirlybirds re-flashed and re-sealed at the base
  • Unwanted whirlybirds removed and the roof made watertight
  • An honest view on whether ventilation will fix the problem
“We called these guys to come and repair our many broken roof tiles on our home in Miranda. They were so quick and had the work done within a few days. We have already recommended them to many friends and family.”

Questions

Whirlybirds, answered

  • They move hot, damp air out of the roof space whenever there's a breeze, which helps most on metal roofs and in roof spaces that trap heat or condensation. They work best when air can come in at the eaves, and one vent on a large roof does little. We'll tell you after looking whether ventilation is likely to help.

  • Almost always the seal at the base: the flashing or collar has perished, rusted or was never sealed to the roof properly, so water runs down the shaft into the ceiling. We re-flash and re-seal it, or replace the whole unit if the head is also worn.

  • Yes. We take it out and make the roof watertight again, with a matching tile or a patched and sealed sheet on a metal roof.

  • Yes. We're based in Miranda and install and repair whirlybirds right across the Sutherland Shire, plus the St George area across the Georges River.

  • No. Quotes are free and there's no obligation. One of our estimators will meet you at the property, get up on the roof to inspect and measure properly, and we'll email you a detailed quote, in most cases within a few hours, with photos and a full report if you need one.
